After winning competitive tenders earlier this year, Ayrmer Software has
developed two bespoke software solutions using the Java 2 Platform Enterprise
Edition (J2EE).
The first project was a desktop database application that uses embedded drivers for Apache Derby and has proved extremely effective. Other software houses suggested using the Microsoft .Net platform, amongst other technologies. We recommended Java as we felt it provided the most flexible solution as well as not having the high 'cost of ownership' as some technologies. The lightweight Java Table (JTable) proved to be extremely flexible, when combined with custom unbound data models, enabling us to create a truly intuitive solution for displaying dynamic, complex data in a simple way.
The second project uses the Java 3D API to provide a 3D simulation of the transit of an oil drill through a well until True Vertical Depth. This project benefited heavily from being able to use the standard Java libraries, in addition to the Java 3D API. Using Java web distributions - web start - we were able to create an complex solution accessible from anywhere in the world.

The software is used as a sales tool helping the business to emphasise their products' Unique Selling Points (USP). It highlights potential problems that can be overcome using their system.
What both projects have proved is that Java has helped Ayrmer Software to develop intuitive software solutions that make complex tasks simple!
